چکیده

We build a model of firm-level innovation, productivity growth and reallocation featuring endogenous entry and exit. A key feature is the selection between highand low-type firms, which differ in terms of their innovative capacity. We estimate the parameters of the model using detailed US Census micro data on firm-level output, R&D and patenting. The model provides a good fit to the dynamics of firm entry and exit, output and R&D, and its implied elasticities are in the ballpark of a range of micro estimates. We find industrial policy subsidizing either the R&D or the continued operation of incumbents reduces growth and welfare. For example, a subsidy to incumbent R&D equivalent to 5% of GDP reduces welfare by about 1.5% because it deters entry of new high-type firms. On the contrary, substantial improvements (of the order of 5% improvement in welfare) are possible if the continued operation of incumbents is taxed while at the same time R&D by incumbents and new entrants is subsidized. This is because of a strong selection effect: R&D resources (skilled labor) are ineffi ciently used by low-type incumbent firms. Subsidies to incumbents encourages the survival and expansion of these firms at the expense of potential high-type entrants. We show that optimal policy encourages the exit of low-type firms and supports R&D by high-type incumbents and entry. JEL No. E2, L1, O31, O32 and O33

Innovation and Reallocation

This paper considers an improvement in capital embodied technology which only production units that adapt to new knowledge can utilize. This innovation is distinct from a decline in capital goods price which can be utilized by all production units. A simple firm dynamics model is used to show that such an innovation shock enhances reallocation, whereas a shock lowering capital goods price reduc...

An Empirical Model of Growth Through Product Innovation

An Empirical Model of Growth Through Product Innovation Productivity dispersion across firms is large and persistent, and worker reallocation among firms is an important source of productivity growth. The purpose of the paper is to estimate the structure of an equilibrium model of growth through innovation that explains these facts. The model is a modified version of the Schumpeterian theory of...

Productivity Growth and Worker Reallocation: Theory and Evidence

Dispersion in labor and factor productivity across firms is large and persistent, large flows of workers move across firms, and worker reallocation is an important source of productivity growth. The purpose of the paper is to provide a formal explanation for these observations that clarifies the role of worker reallocation as a source of productivity growth. Specifically, we study a modified ve...

Changing Business Dynamism: Volatility of Shocks vs. Responsiveness to Shocks?

The pace of business dynamism as measured by indicators such as job reallocation has declined in the U.S. in recent decades, but this decline has not been monotonic for all sectors. For the High Tech sector, business dynamism as measured by the pace of job reallocation rose through the 1990s but then declined sharply in the post-2000 period. This is in contrast with the Retail Trade sector, whi...

Government Spending Composition in a Simple Model of Schumpeterian Growth

This paper investigates the relevance of government purchasing behavior for innovationbased economic growth. We construct a parsimonious Schumpeterian growth model in which demand from the public sphere can effectively alter the economy’s rate of technological change. We incorporate results of various empirical studies arguing that public sector demand acts as incentive for private innovation a...
